What Makes a Trained Adult Leader?

Fast Start :  All adult leaders require Fast Start training specific to their program. Fast Start can be taken on-line (see link at the top of this page)

In addition to Fast Start, adult leaders must take the following courses to complete basic training and be eligible to wear the “TRAINED” patch on their Scouting uniform. Note that Youth Protection and This is Scouting only have to be taken once.

  • Cub Scout leaders: Youth Protection, This is Scouting, and the Cub Scout Leader Specific training for their position.
  • Scoutmasters and Assistant Scoutmasters: Youth Protection, This is Scouting, Scoutmaster and Assistant Scoutmaster Leader Specific Training, and Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills.
  • Troop committee members: Youth Protection, This is Scouting, and Troop Committee Challenge.
  • Varsity Scout leaders and assistants Youth Protection, This is Scouting, Varsity Scout Leader Specific Training, and Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills.
  • Venturing Crew Advisors, assistant Advisors, and crew committee members: Youth Protection, This is Scouting, and Venturing Leader Specific Training.

Descriptions of these trainings are below:

Youth Protection : Learn how to keep our youth safe! Youth protection training is available for adults online through our website. Every registered leader in the Council is required to have Youth Protection Training. Youth Protection training must be renewed every 2 years.

This is Scouting : This course is for all new leaders in Cub Scouting, Boy Scouting, Varsity Scouting, and Venturing. It is an online interactive learning experience that is divided into six modules. It introduces participants to the following areas of the Scouting program: Mission, Vision, and Values; Programs for All Ages and Abilities; Scouting Is Fun!; Scouting in the Community; Protecting Our Youth; and Scouting’s Legacy. Each leader needs to complete This is Scouting training only once.

Cub Scout Leader Specific Training (full course and upgrades ) gets you up to speed in your new Cub Scout position. This training is focused on teaching the new leader, or leader who is moving to a new position, just how easy and fun Cub Scouting can be! If you are training for the first time as a Cub Scout Leader, you must take the full course. If you have already taken the full course and are simply moving to a new position in the Cub Scout program, you only need to take an upgrade course. The upgrade course will involve only the specific information and skills you will need for your new position. This can be taken as a class or online.

Scoutmaster and Assistant Scoutmaster Leader Specific Training is designed to help new Scoutmasters and Assistant Scoutmasters understand the essentials of these leadership positions and realize that they can easily become successful Scout leaders. Discussions, group activities, and video clips will keep the sessions lively and create a fellowship of learning.

Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills (IOLS) : IOLS is a hands-on program that gives Boy Scout leaders the practical skills to lead Scouts in the out-of-doors. The skills taught will introduce the participants to the basic Scout outdoor skills through the First Class rank.

Troop Committee Challenge : This is an interactive and experiential course that helps troop committee members better understand their roles and responsibilities. This training can be offered to individual units or online. Contact your District or Council training chair (see below) for more information.

Varsity Leader Specific Training is designed to introduce the adult Varsity leaders to the basic information needed to operate a team. To arrange for training, contact a member of the Council Varsity Team. Each LDS Stake has a representative.

Venturing Leader Specific Training is designed to introduce the adult Venturing crew leaders to the basic information needed to operate a crew.

SUPPLEMENTAL TRAININGS

Wood Badge for the 21 st Century is the core leadership skills training course for the BSA. It focuses on strengthening every volunteer's ability to work with and lead groups of youth and adults. It is for all adult levels of Scouting, Cub Scouts through Venturers.

National Youth Leadership Training is an exciting, action packed program designed for councils to provide youth members with leadership skills and experience they can use in the home troops and in other situations demanding leadership of self and others.

Basic Adult Leader Outdoor Orientation (BALOO ).   This is a hands-on learning experience that focuses on the techniques needed to plan and conduct a successful pack overnighter.  An adult member of the pack attending the overnighter must have completed this training before the pack can hold an  overnight campout.

Outdoor Leader Skills for Webelos Leaders . This training provides activity badge skills and essential outdoor skills for Webelos leaders to pass on to their Webelos Scouts, as well as knowledge on planning, conducting, and leading Webelos den overnight campouts.  Webelos leaders should attend this training before conducting any Webelos den overnight campouts.

Leave No Trace: Preserving the Beauty and Maintaining Our Access to the Land Learn to identify personal nature awareness and stewardship goals, and learn advanced skills, but simple ones, that will help ensure a minimum-impact (Leave No Trace) experience on all outdoor experiences.

The Trainer’s EDGE replaces the Trainer Development Conference (BSA 500) as the required train-the-trainer course for Wood Badge and NYLT staffs. It is meant to supplement the practice offered through Wood Badge and NYLT staff development, with a focus on the participant, while raising the level of skill a trainer brings to the staff experience. Only practice can polish these skills, but this course is intended to “train the trainer” on behaviors and resources while offering hands-on experience in methods and media.

Cub Scout Leader Pow Wow is Cub Scout leader training extravaganza and idea exchange. Participants can choose from lots and lots of topics helpful for planning Cub Scout events.

Kodiak is a youth leadership courses offered in an exciting and challenging atmosphere using whatever high-adventure resources you have available. Kodiak teaches leadership skills in a fun way that is internalized by the Venturers who take the course.
